How it works
Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 10% applied to most goods and services. Use this calculator to quickly add GST to a net price, or to strip the GST out of a GST-inclusive figure. The Australian Taxation Office requires most registered businesses to collect and remit GST on a quarterly or monthly basis.
This is a general, indicative estimate for illustration only — not tax advice. Confirm GST treatment for your specific goods or services with your accountant or a registered tax agent.
How Australian GST works
GST is a broad-based 10% tax on the supply of most goods and services in Australia. Registered businesses collect GST from their customers and remit it to the ATO via their Business Activity Statement. Businesses with an annual GST turnover of $75,000 or more must register.
The formulas are straightforward. To add GST to an ex-GST price: GST-inclusive = ex-GST × 1.1. To find the GST component of a GST-inclusive price: GST = GST-inclusive ÷ 11. The ex-GST base is therefore the GST-inclusive price divided by 1.1.
GST on debt recovery
GST may apply to Merion's commission — your engagement letter will detail this. The commission displayed in the Net Recovery Estimator is exclusive of GST. When comparing net recovery outcomes, factor in the GST component of the commission to arrive at your true net return.
The debt amount itself — the money your customer owes you — is not subject to GST. GST was already dealt with on the underlying transaction. For further reading on interest charges and late payment, see the Interest Calculator.
